Keep your service library organized as it grows. Service categories let you group services like bookkeeping, tax, or advisory so you can filter, search, and report on them at scale. Best of all, categories are for your eyes only: they never appear on client-facing proposals or invoices.
What are service categories?
A service category is a label you assign to a service in your service library. You create your own categories, so they match the way your firm already thinks about its services.
Categories are a great way to:
Organize a large service catalog into meaningful groups
Quickly filter and search to find the service you need
Report on performance across service lines (for example, advisory vs compliance)
Because categories are internal only, you no longer need workarounds like adding prefixes to service names (e.g. "Accounting Service: Budgeting & Forecasting") or tracking your service groupings in a separate spreadsheet.
Creating and managing your categories
Head to your Services tab → Edit to create and manage your categories.
Click New category to add a new category or click the 3 dots to rename an existing one, or delete a category you no longer need.
Your categories are completely custom, so you can set them up to reflect how your firm organizes its work.
Assigning a category to a service
There are two ways to assign a category to a service:
1. From the Services page — assign a category to a service directly from your services list.
2. From a service's details page — click into a service to assign or change the category assigned.
Filtering and sorting your services
Once your services are categorized, you can use categories to slice your services list:
Filter by category to see only the services in a particular group
List all categories to see your full catalog organized by group
Show services that aren't assigned a category yet, so you can keep your library tidy
Importing and exporting categories
Service categories work with your imports and exports, so you can manage them in bulk.
Exporting — exports from the Services page and the dashboard now include a service category column.
Importing — when you import a CSV that includes a service category column, Ignition will automatically create the categories and assign them to your services. If you wish to assign categories in bulk, ensure the categories are an exact-name match. This is the fastest way to categorize a large catalog all at once.
FAQs
Will my clients see the categories I set?
No. Service categories are internal only — they help you organize and report behind the scenes and never appear on client-facing proposals or invoices.
Can I report on my services by category?
Yes. Category is included in your service exports, so you can analyze performance across your service lines.
Can I categorize a lot of services at once?
Yes. Import a CSV with a service category column and Ignition will create and assign the categories for you.
What happens to services I haven't categorized?
They simply stay uncategorized. You can filter your services list to show everything without a category, so it's easy to come back and organize them later.
